10 Warning Signs of a Cheating Spouse + 12 Digital Signs to Be Aware Of [Affair-Proof]

A staggering 40% of marriages will experience Infidelity at some point, according to marriage.com. Inevitably, infidelity leaves clues. Here are 10 warning signs plus 12 bonus digital red flags to be aware of that a spouse might be having an affair in person or online. It’s a hard topic to discuss, but I want you to be aware of these potential adultery indicators that may need to be addressed sooner than later. The purpose of this podcast is not to make you paranoid or suspicious of your spouse but to shed light on any deception in your marriage you may be unaware of. Remember, you can’t fix what you don’t face.

My husband, Shaun, and I shared our own story of infidelity on last week’s episode. Many of the warning signs we discussed during today’s show were present in my marriage. I’ve also witnessed these signs in the marriages of those I coach who are or have healed from infidelity. With nearly 25 years of marriage experience, I’m passionate about providing valuable insights into rebuilding relationships after infidelity and fostering open, honest conversations.

Infidelity Indicators to Be Aware Of

There are more than 10 warning signs of a spouse having an affair. We could list hundreds, potentially. The key is being aware of these signs and being willing to uncover what might be lurking in the darkness. Oftentimes, spouses choose to look the other way instead of approaching the discussion with courage and an open mind. I do not believe in accusing anyone. That’s why the conversation is important.

I began the episode by discussing my previous series, Affair Proof, and my own vulnerability in sharing my and my husband’s experiences with infidelity. This set the stage for a raw and honest conversation about the warning signs of infidelity within a marriage.

Addressing the first infidelity warning sign, I highlighted the significance of a newfound interest in physical appearance, such as changes in weight, clothing, and grooming. These shifts in behavior can often indicate a deeper underlying issue that should not be dismissed.

More Warning Signs of an Affair

The second warning sign revolved around a spouse’s closeness to a new friend or coworker, potentially sharing intimate details. This sudden connection can raise suspicions and should be approached with curiosity and sensitivity.

Disconnection and apathy in the marriage were brought to the forefront as the third warning sign. Changes in emotional engagement and responsiveness can be indicative of underlying issues that need to be addressed.

Intuition Can Be an Indicator of an Affair

Furthermore, I stressed the importance of paying attention to potential signs of infidelity in a relationship, encouraging my listeners to trust their intuition (or the Holy Spirit’s discernment) while also being diligent and wise. Again, the goal is not to by suspicious, but to follow up on any “strange” behavior you notice.

The Bible says, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all (I John 1:5). I believe God wants his children to walk in the light, not in deception. If something is “off” in your marriage, God will reveal it. He only reveals to heal.

Many couples face disconnection in their marriage (another potential warning sign, especially if accompanied by apathy). While disconnection can be a normal, temporary stage, the presence of other warning signs plus your intuition telling you something is wrong cannot be ignored.

Digital Signs of an Affair

Midway through the episode, I expanded on the warning signs of a spouse having an affair, delving into specific signs that apply to online cheating. These additional observations offer a comprehensive insight into the complexities of infidelity in the digital age. In our modern world, relationships can begin in seconds with the click of a mouse or an instant message from a stranger.

I highlighted behaviors such as secretive phone usage, unexplained credit card purchases, and suspicious Google searches as potential indicators of digital infidelity. These insights prompt my listeners to consider the evolving nature of relationships in the digital era. Some online affairs stay online while many progress into full-blown physical affairs. Neither is good, and both are detrimental to a marriage.

As the episode drew to a close, I offered a Bible-based affirmation, encouraging my listeners to “live in the light”

Looking ahead, I urged my audience to stay tuned for the next episode, where I will discuss what to do if a spouse has had an affair. This ensures that the conversation doesn’t end with the warning signs but delves deeper into the necessary steps for addressing infidelity within a marriage.
